Baking with baby (…and some thoughts about blogging for the joy of it)

A funny thing about blogging, Instagramming and sharing your life online is that it’s hard not to end up viewing things in terms of content and strategy. I find this, in turn, leads to a whole lot of rules and ‘SHOULDS’ to follow. Things such as; I should mix up my content to keep it interesting, not post too much of the same thing. I should be following a content plan that fits into my business strategy to attract new creative mentoring clients. And I should always, but always, be mindful of the value of my content for YOU dear reader! And of course, these things are worth considering as guidance when thinking about what you are creating and sharing with the world. But, do you ever find that over-worrying about all the rules you should be following can totally zap the joy out of posting? That sometimes the SHOULDS get in the way of you actually creating and sharing at all?

I definitely do. Take this post. I’ve delayed posting it for ages because I found myself massively overthinking what I’m sharing on my blog – “I should break up two baby photo heavy posts in a row. There’s no value. It’s not shareable. No one cares!” When all I really wanted to do was share in my little corner of the internet a morning I spent making flapjacks with my son. It sounds pretty silly when written down like that doesn’t it? I wouldn’t blame you for having a little giggle at the ridiculousness of it all. But I maybe a few of you might be nodding along.

There’s so much (usually) brilliant advice out there when it comes to how to make the most of sharing content online, but, I think we can have a tendency to get hung up on particular points and use them as a stick to beat ourselves with.  For me, it seems to be worrying about whether what I’m sharing seems ‘valuable’. Thinking that posts need to be more useful or at least inspirational in some way. But what seems particularly silly, is that the blogs I love the most, are exactly those that share simple snippets of everyday family life. Ones such as Homesong or Deer Circus. Reading about the little moments in people’s lives is joyful, and actually often very inspiring, to me.

More and more I’m feeling like what I want this space to be for is simply sharing little stories of my life, as and when I feel the urge. Sure, sometimes they may well be stories about business or creativity but sometimes they might just be tales of motherhood that go a little something like this…

Baking with babyBaking with babyBaking with babyThere’s something about baking in the morning that just sets you up for a good day. It’s hard not to feel smug happy when by 11 am you’ve made a batch of homemade baby-friendly snacks to last the next few days. Well, a few days in theory. In practice, as they are also rather mama-friendly, they don’t last all that long at all!

I’m loving that we can do more hands-on activities together as Casper gets older. He’s absolutely not a baby anymore! It’s a learning curve, figuring out how we can do things like baking and crafts together in a way that is enjoyable for us both. It’s not always smooth sailing. But on this morning, flapjacks were a success – albeit a very messy, oats everywhere kind of successAnd let’s not even talk about food hygiene practice.

Despite being eaten in little fistfuls and strewn across the dining room, enough mixture seemed to find it’s way into the oven and soon filled the house with that deliciously comforting baking smell.

And briefly to get back to my point about blogging for the joy of it… As I write the first draft of this post, on the notes app on my phone, Casper is snoozing on my chest. We had a rough night and I woke up feeling tired and touched out. But as I quietly tap away on my phone, as his cheek rest against my breast, I’m gently carving out some time for me and my creativity. I’m writing just for the joy of it and in the process, managing to reconnect with myself and my baby. And you know what? I think making another batch of flapjacks is just what we need this afternoon.baby friendly Flapjacks

By the way, we followed this recipe as a great base for sugar-free baby-friendly flapjacks, making some additions and adjustments along the way based on what we had in our cupboard – it just might be this post is kind of useful to you after all  😉

INTENTION

Once, A Glimpse blog, On Blogging

So, it’s been a good couple of months since I posted here. The hiatus wasn’t exactly planned, but it also wasn’t entirely unintentional either. Although I’ve been blogging in one form or another for the best part of a decade, I’ve never exactly been great when it comes to consistency. During the final few months of last year I found that having my focus on other things just didn’t allow the time, or creative headspace, to put into writing blog posts and I found myself thinking a lot about how I wanted proceed with blogging – if at all.

In October 2016 I signed up for Me & Orla’s Instagram E course and really threw myself into improving, developing and growing my Instagram channel. I found taking the course so inspiring and the work I’ve been putting in there has definitely been paying off. Along with improving my photography and growing my following and engagement, I have also made some lovely new friendships with fellow Instagrammers (a few of whom I’m hoping will be reading 🙋🏻). The thing is as I’ve been getting so much fulfilment out of Instagram I found myself wondering if there’s much point in keeping up blogging.

I now plan and create for Instagram the way I used to for my blog. It used to be if I was going to and event, out for a walk or even baking a cake, my DSLR would be right with me to document and the occasion would (eventually) find its way onto my blog. Although I never grew a particularly large readership, that little old blog helped me show off some skills in a couple of different job interviews and really was my way into a career in social media.

Despite launching with big ideas I haven’t given this space here at Once, A Glimpse anywhere near as much dedication as I did my old site. But yet here I am…

Once, A Glimpse blog, On Blogging

To be fair, when I launched this blog last spring I was on the cusp of a year that would prove to be full-on; I turned 30, bought a house and moved, we had a major family bereavement, I got made redundant and began working for myself. Despite not finding the time or general wherewithal to publish posts I never stopped writing, albeit in a sporadic kind of way. I have been writing content for clients along the way and contributed a few bits to local sites. Intermittently I got into the practice of doing morning pages, I’d scribble down ideas, kept gratitude journals on-and off and fill note books pages with half-formed blogs posts in-amongst to-do lists.

I think ultimately it’s that desire to keep writing that makes me know I’m not done with blogging. But I want to give more of myself to this space, not just hop on to re-hash Instagram content or post a quick playlist, not just keep up with the bare minimum so I can use it on my CV!

I toyed with the idea of trying something a bit different with the blog, to rekindle my inspiration… choosing a particular theme, or something like that. But, ultimately I realised I would be creating more of a rod for my own back. So, I decided instead to just chill about it… and lo and behold there’s three posts scheduled for this month already!

There’s a few things I know I would like to work towards on the blog – like including posts related to social media and other elements of my freelance work, sharing some of the changes I’ve been making over the last year and generally just go deeper with my blog writing…but no grand plans or promises to stick to a posting schedule. I’ll be here, more wholeheartedly and hopefully more often, and when I’m not – you know where to find me.

Hello and welcome to the first post of my new blog Once, A Glimpse; written by me Charlie Swift.

Having been blogging for a number of years the time felt right to start afresh, with a clean new look, a new blog name and importantly renewed inspiration and motivation. Ultimately blogging is a creative outlet for me and for whatever reason I’ve just not been feeling the urge to create and post content under my old guise.

The last year has marked some major changes in my life; I got married, started a new job, I just turned 30 last week and we are currently looking to buy a house that we can grow into. Along with the life changes, of course, my taste and style has also shifted over the years and I’m excited to launch a new space that will better reflect my interests, personality and passions.

Whether you have followed me here from www.nothingnewblog.co.uk, my social media channels or you’re an entirely new reader, I’m so glad to have you here and hope you’ll drop by often. I plan to fill this little corner of the internet with beautiful photos that maybe captured on Lomography film or snapped on my iPhone; with wholesome delicious recipes; with stories of adventures had and lessons learnt; with music and playlists; with hopes, fears, dreams… food! Things that inspire me and may hopefully inspire you too. I have plenty scheduled for the coming weeks to give you a taste of what to expect.

In-between blog posts find me mainly on Instagram & Twitter. Please do say hello, I’d love to get to know ya!
